It is normal to experience irritation on the skin around the eye while patching. These tips have been provided to us by eye care professionals. All adhesive patches provided by the Ohio Amblyope Registry are hypoallergenic and latex free.
Please keep in mind the patches are supposed to be sticky. Your child should not be able to easily remove the patch, and it should not peak through. Just like a Band-Aid, when the patch is removed it might leave a red area around the skin. It is normal. The skin around the eye is very sensitive, but do not worry. Try the tips below to decrease skin irritation.
- Before you put the patch on, apply a thin coat of liquid milk of magnesia or use No Sting Skin Protective Wipes (available online) to the skin where the patch will stick to. Let dry and then put the patch on.
- After the patch is removed, lightly apply Vitamin E oil to the skin where the adhesive part of the eye patch was.
If you are still experiencing irritation after using these tips, contact your eye care professional. Never apply a product directly to the inside of the eye unless the product was prescribed to be applied to the eye by a medical professional.
