Helpful information for your child if they are having a reaction to adhesive patches.

It is normal to experience irritation on the skin around the eye while patching. These tips have been provided to us by eye care professionals.  All adhesive patches provided by the Ohio Amblyope Registry are hypoallergenic and latex free.

  1. Before you put the patch on, apply a thin coat of Mylanta/milk of magnesia or Cavilon No-Sting Barrier around the eye.  Let dry and then put the patch on
  2. About 15 minutes before removing the eye patch, coat the outside of the patch with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or baby oil to loosen the adhesive a bit.  *Only apply on the edges of patch, not in the center.*
  3. After the patch is removed, lightly apply Vitamin E oil around the eye where the patch was placed.

If you are still experiencing irritation after using the tips above, contact your eye care professional.
