The Ohio Department of Health is responsible for the management and oversight of the Save Our Sight (SOS) fund, the awarding of SOS grants and contracts including the Ohio Amblyope Registry. Ohio Optometric Association
The mission of the Ohio Optometric Association is to promote high quality optometric care for the residents of Ohio, preserve and advance the profession of optometry, serve as an advocate for patients and members, and serve as the principal resource for public health information regarding the eyes and vision. Doctors of optometry can provide a lifetime of comprehensive eye care. In addition to providing eye examinations, refractive surgery consultation/referral, contact lenses and eye glasses, OOA optometrists test for and diagnose eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration and treat eye diseases with prescriptions.

Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG)
“The Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) is a collaborative network dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research in strabismus, amblyopia and other eye disorders that affect children. The network, which was formed in 1997, is funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). The NEI is a part of the National Institutes of Health, which is the branch of government that funds medical research. There are currently over 60 participating sites (offices) with over 120 pediatric ophthalmologists and pediatric optometrists in the United States and Canada participating in the network.”

Prevent Blindness America
“Prevent Blindness America® is the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight. Prevent Blindness America serves millions of people each year through public and professional education, community and patient services programs and research.” A “must see” site for information and its graphic displays. PBA has also collated all the children programs under their Star Pupils program (starpupils.org) to educate parents of the visual needs of their children.

Save Our Sight
The focus of the Save Our Sight Fund is to provide early detection of vision problems and the promotion of good eye health and safety.
When Ohioans apply for or renew their license plates, they will be asked if they want to contribute $1 to the fund and it will be added to their fee.
Money raised:
- Protective eyewear for youth sports and school activities and preventing eye injuries
- Support to children with amblyopia (lazy eye) through the Ohio Amblyope Registry
- Vision screening of children through training and equipping of screeners
- Eye health and safety programs for our schools
Wise About Eyes Program
A Save Our Sight funded program for children, Wise About Eyes supports three main efforts:
- Vision Screening Training and Certification
- Eye Health and Safety Education
- Medical Education
Managed by Prevent Blindness Ohio (PBO), PBO provides preschool vision screening education, training, certification and equipment to serve the needs of primary health care providers in Ohio. Eye Health and Safety Education provides hands-on learning opportunities for children and adults that will enable them to make wise, informed decisions about how to keep their eyes healthy and safe throughout their lifetime. In cooperation with the American Academy of Pediatrics-Ohio Chapter, PBO provides a one-hour medical education program to pediatric and family practice medical students and residents. The program emphasizes the importance of vision assessment for young children and provides general information about eye health.
